The American Experience: Chasing the Moon In-Person

The American Experience: Chasing the Moon

This July, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Mission that took US astronauts to the moon. The 50th anniversary date of the landing is July 20.

The Henderson County Public Library presents a sneak peek of the film, Chasing the Moon, which airs on UNC TV on July 8, 9 and 10, 2019. A film by Robert Stone, Chasing the Moon appears as part of PBS'  The American Experience. "The series recasts the Space Age as a fascinating stew of scientific innovation, political calculation, media spectacle, visionary impulses and personal drama." Stone includes previously overlooked and lost archival material to portray the history of the space program and key figures, including Buzz Aldrin and Sergei Khrushchev.

We will show an excerpt (approximately 40 minutes) from the film before it airs.  We will also present library resources for more information  on the Space Race and NASA missions, including other video sources . Audience members may share their memories of this historical milestone if they wish.
